Mechanical/Electronic Engineer (SolidWorks/Prototyping)
Designing and developing bespoke electromechanical devices for the life sciences industry
Location: Loughton, England (On site)
Contract: Full-time
Salary: Competitive
Company Description
UK Robotics provides cutting-edge robotics and automation solutions with expertise in turnkey and modular integrated laboratory automation systems. Our flagship product, Revolution, is a dynamic scheduler powering next-generation lab automation in the Life Science industry. Alongside software, our bespoke devices and integrated systems are deployed in labs worldwide.
Role Description
We’re not just looking for a mechanical engineer, we’re looking for a creator, a problem solver, and someone who thrives across disciplines.
As an Engineer at UK Robotics, you will play a pivotal role in designing and developing bespoke electromechanical devices for the life sciences industry. You’ll use SolidWorks to create precise designs, build prototypes, and collaborate with electronics and software teams to bring devices from concept through to production. This isn’t a narrow CAD-only role, it’s a chance to work across the full stack of device development, from hands-on prototyping to integration with robotic systems.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, model, and document mechanical components and assemblies using SolidWorks.
- Develop prototypes and support testing, iteration, and refinement.
- Collaborate with electronics and software engineers to integrate mechanical designs with control systems and automation software.
- Work with external suppliers and in-house workshops on manufacturing and assembly.
- Contribute ideas for new device concepts, mechanisms, and features.
- Ensure designs meet requirements for reliability, safety, and scalability.
- Support troubleshooting and continuous improvement of deployed systems.
Qualifications
- Strong proficiency in SolidWorks (3D modelling, assemblies, and detailed drawings).
- Experience with electromechanical systems or mechatronics.
- Exposure to full-stack device development: from design through prototyping and into manufacture.
- Good understanding of materials, tolerances, and DFM (Design for Manufacture).
- Ability to work closely with electronics, firmware, and software engineers.
- Problem-solving mindset with a hands-on approach.
- Familiarity with rapid prototyping tools (3D printing, CNC, laser cutting).
- Adaptability, creativity, and a collaborative “can-do” attitude.
Nice to Have
- Experience in life sciences, biotech, or medical devices.
- Exposure to control systems, sensors, or embedded hardware.
- Practical assembly, workshop, or test experience.
Why Join Us
- Be part of a cross-disciplinary team shaping the future of lab automation.
- Work on devices where software meets hardware and ideas quickly become prototypes.
- See your designs deployed in cutting-edge laboratories worldwide.
- Collaborate with engineers from multiple disciplines in a dynamic, fast-moving environment.
